This web site features birds — both around the world and in Monterey County, California, where I live — plus a variety of topics for the birdwatcher and naturalist: cetaceans on Monterey Bay, mammals and herps around the world, bird identification features and assorted birding topics. All photos were taken in the wild; most are by me but there are great shots here by Greg Lasley, Ed Harper, John Sorensen, Bill Hill, Jeff Poklen, David Fisher, Blake Matheson, Ron Saldino, Trevor Quested, Hans & Judy Beste, Rohan Clarke, James Ownby, Hideo Tani, and other friends. All photos are copyrighted by the photographer credited and may not be used without permission. This web site is always being expanded or updated; click on what's new above.

The montage includes Harpy Eagle [Brazil], Short-tailed Albatross [California], Philippine Eagle [Philippines], Long-tailed Ground-Roller [Madagascar], and Kagu [New Caledonia].
Major topics related to world birding are reached through these portals:

I am partial to Monterey Bay with its seabirds (Sabine's Gull below left) and marine mammals (Orcas below right)

I'm also quite interested in the natural habitats around the world and enjoy much more than birds. I have pages on:

Tiger at Ranthambhore, India, March 2001
I've had the opportunity to travel widely from coral atolls to the plains of Africa, and I've done underwater photography, bird and mammal shots, and digiscoping. This website is a chance to share some photographs with a wider audience, and to babble on about the diversity on our home planet.

Photos above: an unnamed coral atoll near Heron I., Great Barrier Reef, Australia;
clownfish on Wisteria Reef, Heron I.; sleeping Lion and a
herd of Impala, Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Much herein has been shared with my wife Rita Carratello. Beyond birds, travel, and wildlife, she has a serious interest in 'the theatre' and a page on Rita's 'Life in the Theatre' is now among the offerings.

I also have an interest in the U.S. Civil War and other aspects of American history. Pages on those topics ('rating the Presidents'?) may appear eventually, including those who might be termed miserable failure . . .
