Description: Monterey County Men’s Alternatives to Violence (MATV) is a men’s counseling service focusing on domestic violence. We are volunteer peer counselors who have chosen to work toward the elimination of violence in ourselves and our community. We believe that violence is learned behavior and that it can be unlearned. All men have been conditioned by the society in which they grew up and therefore have the potential to be violent. By better understanding our conditioning, we increase our ability to choose safer behavior. In our weekly meetings, we offer information, support and a safe place to make changes in critical areas of our lives, such as violence, anger, self esteem and communication. Our counselors meet with men in small groups to learn how to solve problems without violence, improve communication skills, understand anger and express it safely. The groups meet for two hours each week in a confidential and safe setting. A minimum of six months of meeting weekly is strongly recommended for real change to begin. We encourage each man to share what he learns in MATV with his partner, not as a method of control, but as a step toward real change.
