Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist
Spanish Hymnal Project

Concept

I started putting together this hymnal in 1999 for the Spanish language services in the First Unitarian Church in San Jose, California. It is based on a previous collection of songs without music. I began photocopying songs from the English hymnal, Singing the Living Tradition (SLT) and changing the song lyrics into Spanish using Adobe Photoshop. Also, uder the penname Efraín Herrera Hanson, I translated various hymns from SLT and elsewhere. Of course, translations are almost never exact. I also sought out other hymnals from Christian denominations in order to get translations of songs we Unitarians sing, with or without modifications. Since then, I have taken a number of music courses at Hartnell College in Salinas and have learned to use music notation software. Part of the project now is to create a consistent format for all the hymns. To date (March, 2002) there are 109 hymns in the hymnal and I continue looking for more.
